Brief Biography+++++++

Studied at the National College of Art and Design. He currently lectures in Sound Art in the School Of Music and Drama, UCC as well as visiting lecturer and workshop facilitator in various institutions. He has pioneered both performance art and sound art in Ireland and he continues to be a leading exponent exhibiting and performing both in Ireland and abroad including SPAN2 in London and at “Hearing Place” in Melbourne, Australia. His work is in the collections of the Arts Council Of Ireland, Crawford Municipal Gallery and Limerick City Gallery and numerous other public and private collections in Ireland and abroad. In November 2007 he presented his sound and visual installation “(Re)sounding Memories /Watering The Plants” in Le Lieu Centre dArte Actualle Quebec,Canada where he also presented a live sound performance. In 2004 exhibited/performed in the prestigious TRACE Gallery Cardiff with a new work “Wild Oats & Cornerstones” .

His work has appeared on numerous C.D.s and has been broadcast widely on both radio and T. V.His work regulary appears on the programme NOVA Lyric FM and he has been the subject of several features on the programme.. He is a founding director of Triskel Arts Centre and of the National Sculpture Factory and is a director the Sirius Arts Centre Cobh. He is the recipient of numerous awards and bursaries from both the Irish Arts Council and Dept of Foreign Affairs, Culture Ireland and has represented Ireland abroad at various exhibitions. He is a First Prize winner in EV+A (selector Pierre Restany)

More recent exhibitions include “Sounding The Town”(installation) and “Wa(l)king The Dream”(live sound performance with Viv Corringham) in the Sirius Arts Centre Cobh Ireland. . He has exhibited as part of the “Trace Retrospective 2000-05” in Franklin Furnace, New York. He is co editor (with Julie Forrester) of the book “For Those Who Have Ears”and as part of Cork2005 European Capital Of Culture he co curated (with David Toop) “Sound Out” a major international exhibition of sound art, he also edited the exhibition catalogue and CD . In 2006 he curated a CD entitled “Bend It Like Beckett” for Sound Works/Art Trail Festival to commemorate the Beckett Centenary.

In 2006 he founded The Quiet Club (with Mick O Shea) a floating membership sound(art and electronics) performance group and they have presented works all over Ireland and also Europe, China, Japan, USA and Canada.

He recently presented his installation “Another Gong For Mr. Beckett” at the Factory Gallery Berlin and exhibited in “Found Sound” in the Takt Gallery Berlin. His video “Keepers Of The Light” was part of the international video art exhibition “Who Are Your Friends” in the Soap Gallery Japan (www.g-soap.jp) In 2007 he completed a tour to Japan where he presented a sound and visual installation”(Re)sounding Memories/Cleaning The House” in CAP House, Kobe Japan plus other live sound performances including the prestigious Hyogo Perfectual Museum of Art (www.artm.pref.hyogo.jp) .Other recent shows include “Then The Silence Increased” (UK) and “Art Is Not Mute” (Sweden/Hungary) He exhibited from his series “The Rematerialization Of Sound As An Art Object” in the Black Mariah Gallery Cork as part of Art Trail 2007.He also performed with The Quiet Club as part of Art Trail 2007and at DEAF (Dublin Electronic Arts Festival) and at the I & E festival. In May 2008 they performed at the STATIC Gallery Liverpool as part of its European Capital Of Culture celebrations they also featured solo and with guests as part of The Quiet Music Festival.

Their first CD “Tesla” was released on Farpoint Recordings. They curate the annual Sonic Vigil Festival and are currently preparing for tours to China and Poland later this year. A solo exhibition”Listening With The Sound Turned Off” took place in Triskel Arts Centre in 2009 and a book + CD on his work “LISTEN hEAR” (TEXTS BY Julie Forrester & David Toop) was published by Farpoint Recordings.In 2009 his work was the subject of a special ninety minute programme on Nova on Lyric FM presented by Bernard Clarke.He has recently exhibited as part of “Postcards From The Celtic Tiger” in the Xuhui Arts Museum, Shanghai, China and in 2010 completed a tour to Shanghai,China with The Quiet Club where they performed at the World Expo 2010 and 411Gallery,the Jing An Arts Centre and other venues followed by a residency with The Quiet Club and solo works in ART =+ADDING in Szchezin,Poland.

In 2011 he participated in a residency in the Crawford Gallery Cork entitled “Strange Attractor” along with four other artists (Mick O’Shea, Irene Murphy, Anthony Kelly and David Stalling) a major publication and DVD of this project was published by Farpoint Recordings and the Crawford Gallery in Nov 2011 with performances in Cork, London and Dublin. His work “Keeper Of The Dust(for Joseph Beuys)” was commissioned by the Crawford Gallery for the Sean Lynch curated “A Rocky Road” exhibition. His piece “ One Hundred Bottles For James Joyce” was on exhibition for five months in O’Connell Street Dublin in 2011 as part of “Me Jewel & Darling” public art project curated by Sean Lynch. A new book and 3” CD entitled The Memory Room was published by Farpoint Recordings accompanied by an installation in the Guesthouse Shandon Cork

He exhibited/performed as part of Strange Attractor in Studio Soto,Boston and Harvestworks New York as part of their USA tour in 2012. His 7”vinyl single “White Star Line” has been released on Farpoint Recordings to coincide with the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic.

His exhibition/installation “The Memory (box) Room” was presented in Soundfjord Gallery London in June 2013 and his latest work “The Dead (flat) C Scrolls” was premiered in Skibbereen Arts Festival. A cassette release “The Beat Groups Of Askeaton” was released on Farppoint Recordings in 2014.

An installation “LUSITANIA (re)CALLING” was presented in Sirius Arts Centre Cobh to co-inside with the centenary of the sinking of the ship in May 1915. A special limited edition 10” vinyl was also released on Farpoint Recordings to mark the occasion.

In January 2016 the artist was invited to spend time in the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation in Captiva Florida. This is one of the most prestigious residencies in the world and is by invitation only. This resulted in an exhibition in the Commonwealth University Of Virginia and also in the Rauschenberg Foundation Galleries in Captiva Florida.

A new CD “Where The Quiet Crow Flies” by The Quiet Club and crOw has just been released on the Farpoint Recordings label.

Currently the artist is preparing work for shows in Triskel Arts Centre, Future Histories , in Kilmainham Jail (1916 commission) and a solo exhibition “Beyond Silence” in the Crawford Municipal Gallery in Sept 2016.
